Organisational Structure and Governance
Our way of working is determined by our leadership structure, governance, annual and quarterly cycles, values and commitments.
Leadership structure
The organisation is led by the CEO, Wouter van Tongeren, who works with two Directors (Surabhi Srivastava – Director Media Innovation and Hassan Mahtat – Director Partnerships and Implementation) to lead their teams of experts as ‘chairs’ thus facilitating decision making and progress. Experts work in multiple teams allowing them to contribute to several of the organizational objectives coming from the 3 year strategic goals. In our annual plan we set our annual and quarterly milestones and targets and collaborate to reach them in ‘90 day sprints’. This allows us to set the pace yet remain adaptive to emerging opportunities and challenges.
The CEO and the People & Culture Advisor meet once every quarter with the PVT (personeelsvertegenwoordiging) to address, consult and align on matters directly impacting employees. Furthermore the CEO is advised by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion working group that also help implement organisational actives to celebrate diversity and address matters like unconscious bias.
Governance
The CEO as the ‘Bestuurder’ is supervised by the Supervisory Board (Raad van Toezicht) and its Audit and Integrity Committee. The Supervisory Board (SB) members are appointed by its members, serve for 4 years, can be re-elected once and do not get paid. The Supervisory Board (SB) approves the strategy, annual plan and budget, the management report and annual accounts, strategic changes and important decisions impacting employees. The SB meets at least 4 times a year and more often if emerging challenges require so. The Audit Committee of two SB members meets an additional two times to prepare decision making on the annual budget and annual accounts. The annual accounts are audited by Dubois + Co Register Accountants. The CEO is annually evaluated by the Remuneration Committee of two SB members based on their own observations, a self-evaluation of the CEO and consultations of the PVT and Leadership Team.
RNW Media is proud to have an experienced SB who provide guidance when needed. The current SB constellation is;
- Lionel Veer (Chair) – Retired Dutch Diplomat and former Consul General in St Petersburg, former Ambassador at UNESCO and former Ambassador for Human Rights. Lionel is in his first term 2025 – 2029
- Susan Blankhart (Vice Chair) – Vice Chair Supervisory Board Plan Nederland, Retired Dutch Diplomat and former Women’s Rights Ambassador, former Ambassador to Sudan former Ambassador to Egypt. Susan is in her second term from 2021 to 2025
- Ivo Verlinden (Chair Audit Committee) – CFO Orbital Eye, former CFO Triskelion. Ivo is in his second term from 2024 to 2028.
- Verena Kenngott (Audit Committee) – Credit Risk Management Rabobank. Verena is in her first term 2024 to 2028.
- Amcke Becker (Integrity Committee) – Chief Engagement Officer WWF-NL, former Global Client Partner Meta. Amcke is in her first term from 2023 to 2027.

Ou values determine how we engage with the world; we are:
- Curious – We thrive on exploration and the pursuit of questions. Our eagerness to learn propels us down new paths and into emerging opportunities.
- Fresh – Situated at the crossroads of digital media, international development, and human rights, our creativity drives us to continuously rethink and refine for better solutions.
- Inclusive – We contribute to a world where diverse perspectives and voices are valued. Inclusivity defines not only our goals but also how we work—with each other and with partners.
- Synergetic -We believe that progress is made together. The whole is always greater than the sum of its parts.
- Adaptive – Remaining open to new insights is part of our DNA. We advance our approaches to meet changing circumstances.
Our commitments determine how we work with each other. Our multicultural team understands the local contexts of the regions in which we work. They bring knowledge, insights and skills and work together as experts in media innovation, social listening, impact, digital marketing, digital data analysis and product development, curriculum design, advocacy and many other topics. With this team, building on the organisational lessons, RNW Media is uniquely positioned to pioneer in support of public interest digital media. Our commitments are the foundation of our work culture; a culture of care, trust and personal accountability but also a culture of excellence. These commitments guide how we collaborate in and across teams, solve challenges, and achieve results:
- Well-being – We prioritize the well-being of everyone we work with, fostering care, trust and personal accountability. This approach strengthens collaboration, mutual respect, and community within RNW Media.
- Constructive dialogue – We listen actively, ask questions, and engage in open, two-way communication. Seeking to understand different perspectives fosters teamwork and stronger relationships.
- Focus on results – We tackle challenges head-on, pursue clear outcomes, and hold ourselves accountable. We set high standards, ensuring follow-through on commitments and proactive issue resolution.
- Agility in action – We embrace a good-to-go mindset, knowing that progress requires action, even without perfection. This approach keeps us responsive in a fast-changing world.
- Learning from successes and mistakes – We embrace every learning opportunity, whether from achievements or setbacks. This growth-oriented mindset builds resilience and enhances our collective knowledge.
- Drive for improvement – We challenge ourselves and each other to think creatively and push for excellence. Continuous learning and improvement ensure we stay agile and impactful.
