We proudly launch Under Attack, Still We Rise!, a digital coffee table book spotlighting the experiences, resilience and power of women journalists and media makers confronting violence in the digital space. To introduce the book, Media Innovation Lead Surabhi Srivastava held a live discussion with Loes Loning (Netherlands) Chrystine Mhanna (Lebanon), Winfrida Ngassa (Tanzania) and Jacque Manabat (Philippines) to reflect on the urgent need for safer, more inclusive media environments.
Under Attack, Still We Rise! captures the lived realities of women media makers facing online violence, from cyberstalking and hate speech to threats of gender-based violence. Through personal testimonies, portraits and reflections, the book honours their determination to keep telling stories that matter. This publication features illustrations by Hadeel Ahmed and was made possible through programmes Masarouna and Right Here, Right Now.
Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) is a growing threat to freedom of expression. For women in media, it’s not just about online harassment – it’s a professional and personal safety risk that aims to silence their voices. By documenting and amplifying these experiences, we aim to challenge impunity, raise awareness and drive structural change in the digital media space.
The launch of this book is part of our broader International Women’s Day campaign, which this year is dedicated to promoting the safety of women in media. Throughout March, we spotlighted the threats women face online, shared tools for digital safety and stood in solidarity with those fighting back against online violence – demanding accountability and action from platforms, policymakers and media institutions alike.
