Building partnerships, sharing knowledge, and strengthening digital media ecosystems across East Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, RNW Media\u2019s team was in Nairobi, Kenya, for a week filled with collaboration, research, and innovation. The visit brought together partners, experts, and media-makers to advance gender equality, wellbeing, and digital safety in Kenya\u2019s online spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 1: Examining Anti-Gender Narratives in Digital Media<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Together with our research partners,\u00a0Meza Yetu Collective, we expanded on the findings from our ongoing research on anti-gender narratives in Kenya\u2019s digital media space. The discussions helped identify actors, topics, and trends dominating online discourse and explored ways to build\u00a0counter and alternative narratives\u00a0that promote gender equality and rights online in Kenya (and beyond).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2: Spotlight on Mental Health of Media-Makers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We hosted a\u00a0consultation workshop\u00a0on the mental health and wellbeing of journalists and digital media makers in Kenya \u2014 the\u00a0first-of-its-kind study\u00a0in East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing together 40 experts from the media and mental health sectors, the workshop offered evidence-informed insights and practical strategies to strengthen mental health support for media professionals, both online and offline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Days 3\u20135: Fellowship on Reporting Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

RNW Media co-hosted a\u00a0five-day fellowship\u00a0where journalists, content creators, and advocates explored how to report on TFGBV through a\u00a0rights-based, gender-sensitive, and survivor-centred lens. Participants produced impactful content from personal stories and radio features to poetry, amplifying voices and driving awareness of this growing issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Media Council Kenya and RNTC Partner to Create a\u00a0Regional Media Skills Development & Innovation Hub<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Media Council of Kenya\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0RNTC<\/a>\u00a0(Radio Netherlands Training Centre) have signed a pact to establish a Regional Media Skills Development and Innovation Hub in Kenya. The Hub will provide high-quality, inclusive, and forward-looking training programs for journalists, digital content creators, media practitioners, and communications professionals across East Africa.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the week, we also met with key partners and allies including:
Media Council of Kenya,<\/a> Baraza Media Lab<\/a>, Open Society Foundations<\/a>, UNESCO<\/a>, Africa Uncensored,<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kenya.<\/a>
Together, we\u2019re working to\u00a0build safer, more reliable, and inclusive digital media spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
