{"id":5902,"date":"2019-01-07T14:50:06","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T13:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rnw.media\/?post_type=news&amp;p=5902"},"modified":"2019-01-07T14:50:06","modified_gmt":"2019-01-07T13:50:06","slug":"anniversary-celebrations-for-rntc-in-2018","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.rnw.media\/index.php\/news\/anniversary-celebrations-for-rntc-in-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Anniversary celebrations for RNTC in 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2018\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0year RNTC celebrated\u00a0half a century since first opening its doors to media professionals from around the world looking to develop their skills.\u00a0 Since then, RNW Media\u2019s training centre had earned an enviable reputation as a centre of excellence and innovation. More than\u00a05,500 media professionals and dozens of media and non-profit organisations have benefited from RNTC\u2019s expertise in delivering state-of-the-art, career-changing courses and tailor-made trainings.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Over the past 50 years, RNTC has trained participants from 58 developing countries, in five languages. But annually, only 100 of the 900 students from developing countries who apply are granted a scholarship to attend a course.\u00a0So\u00a0to mark its 50<span data-fontsize=\"11\">th<\/span>\u00a0year, RNTC launched a Scholarship Fund for Media Development to train talented individuals and build more powerful voices. So\u00a0far\u00a0the fund has raised\u00a025.000\u00a0from donors including\u00a0The\u00a0US State Department\u00a0Enough to train\u00a07\u00a0people &#8211; and fundraising continues.<\/p>\n<p>Other events to mark this anniversary included masterclasses\u00a0for\u00a0NGOS and civil society organisations in the Netherlands on using media for behaviour change.<\/p>\n<h2>Online Academy launched<\/h2>\n<p>Alongside the birthday celebrations, the RNTC team pursued its mission of delivering high quality trainings, seminars, presentations and workshops both at its base in Hilversum and in the field at locations all around the globe. Two and three-week residential courses in Hilversum covered topics such as data and investigative journalism, becoming a digital content creative, media campaigns for development and social change and reaching your audience with storytelling. 2018 also saw the launch of RNTC\u2019s Online Academy in multiple languages \u2013 English, French, Arabic and Chinese. This interactive platform allows participants to prepare and access training materials and means RNTC can serve a broader range of trainees.<\/p>\n<p>Activities outside the Netherlands included tailor-made trainings for Somali and Sudanese media professionals in Ethiopia, workshops in Romania on tackling disinformation and fake news in Eastern Europe and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=global+reporting+initiative&amp;rlz=1C1GCEA_enNL828NL828&amp;oq=Global+Reporting+Initiative&amp;aqs=chrome.0.0l6.594j0j4&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Global\u00a0Reporting Initiative<\/a>\u00a0trainings in multiple locations\u00a0including\u00a0South\u00a0Africathe\u00a0Philippines\u00a0and\u00a0Peru.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Media for development<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As well as working with media professionals,\u00a0RNTC offers specialised capacity building for NGOs and development professionals. 2018 saw a team of senior trainers heading to Washington for a workshop to explore the World Bank&#8217;s role in media, good governance and development with participants from the Bank and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cima.ned.org\/\">Center for International Media Assistance<\/a>\u00a0. Media development programmes remain fragmented and poorly funded, making up a tiny fraction of overall development spending.
